Ten people were confirmed drowned, while the fate of 18 others remains uncertain, as they are still missing. The delayed arrival of rescue officials slowed immediate rescue operations, further deteriorating the situation. Enraged by the delay, locals set six boats and a waiting room on fire. The mob’s agitation led to clashes with police, injuring few officers.

Hooghly, March 12, 2022: A serene journey across the Hooghly river turned into a nightmare as an overloaded ferry with 40 passengers, capsized midstream. The ill-fated voyage, starting from Rajabagan ghat to Pondra ghat, abruptly met its tragic end when the ferry succumbed to its burden, sinking into the river waters.

Twelve lives, including 4 women and 3 children, are feared lost to the river’s depths, while the remaining passengers narrowly escaped by swimming ashore. Prompt action by a rescue team led to the recovery of all bodies, and the submerged ferry was salvaged after three arduous hours.

In the wake of the calamity, questions are still unanswered regarding the circumstances that led to the capsizing. The boatman responsible for navigating the vessel has been detained as authorities start an inquiry to ascertain accountability and prevent future tragedies.
